Dr. Rev. Robert J. Cranston
9/19/1927 - 3/10/2010

The Dr. Rev. Robert J. Cranston age 82 of Greenville, passed away at 5:25 PM Wednesday March 10, 2010 surrounded by his family at Greenville Regional Hospital in Greenville.



Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the Wilson Recital Center within the Whitlock Music Center at Greenville College. For those who desire memorials may be made to the Light and Life Bible College at Donnell-Wiegand. The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home. Interment will be in Mt.Auburn Cemetery with military honors.



Robert Jerrell Cranston, the son of John Alexander Cranston and Agnes Viola Moore Cranston, was born on June 19, 1927 in Lake Monroe, Florida, where he worked at a clothing store. He grew up there and joined the United States Navy on June 20, 1945. He rose to the rank of Seaman First Class serving aboard the vessels and stations including the USS Dorchester, USS LST and USS AFDL. He was honorably discharged on August 9, 1946 in Jacksonville, Florida. He came to Greenville College where he graduated in 1949 and during his college years worked for the Dewey and Son Mortuary. He taught at Wessington Springs, and graduated from Asbury Seminary in 1954.  Robert and Carolyn L. Shaw were united in marriage on September 12, 1947 in Filmore, Minn. and have enjoyed over 62 years together. She survives as do their children: Suzanne K., Mrs. Ken Abrams of Lynnwood, WA, Dr. Steven J. (Laura) Cranston of Ballwin, MO, Dr. Robert E. (Barbara) Cranston of Champaign, IL, John M. (Mary) Cranston of Harrisonburg, VA, 13 grandchildren: Courtney Shanahan, Emily Leopando, Allison Shanahan, Stephanie Vasta, Emily Cranston, Daniel Cranston, Sarah Cranston, Joanna Cranston, Jonathan Cranston, Hannah Cranston, Michael Cranston, Kyle Abrams, Kayla Abrams, and his brother Frank W. (Ardyce) Cranston, of Seattle, WA. They pastored in Lake Worth Florida for 3 1/2 years, joined the Missionary Board serving in Ybore City, Little Havana, Tampa for 6 1/2 years then to the Philippines in 1963 serving 32 years in Asia and Indonesia. He received his MTH  Masters from Asbury in 1968 and his Doctorate from Trinity in 1981. He retired at midnight on July 31, 1995. They enjoyed spending part of the year in Florida and part in Greenville until 2007 when they settled here in Greenville. He received his Honorary Doctorate from Greenville College. 

Robert is a member of the Atlantic South Free Methodist Confrence.  



Robert is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Harold and Ralph Cranston.
